“Aaron Rodgers: Enigma” premiers today on Netflix - documentary exploring his use of ayahuasca, a psychedelic brew traditionally used in Amazonian shamanic rituals

Updated: Dec 17

In the new Netflix documentary titled "Aaron Rodgers: Enigma," Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback for the New York Jets, shares insights into his personal journey, particularly focusing on how he managed to overcome his perfectionism and reconcile with the religious faith from his childhood. A significant part of this exploration involves his use of ayahuasca, a psychedelic brew traditionally used in Amazonian shamanic rituals.

The documentary delves into Rodgers' experiences with ayahuasca retreats, which he credits with providing him spiritual growth and a deeper understanding of self, which he suggests played a role in his professional success and personal evolution. Rodgers discusses how these retreats helped him achieve a balance between what he describes as the "divine masculine and divine feminine," indicating a profound impact on his perception of masculinity and personal well-being.

One highlighted event in the documentary is Rodgers' trip to Costa Rica where he participated in ayahuasca ceremonies alongside Dolphins safety Jordan Poyer. This retreat is framed as a journey towards hope and mental clarity, especially in the context of recovering from his devastating Achilles injury during his 2023 Jets debut.

"Aaron Rodgers: Enigma" also doesn't shy away from the controversies surrounding Rodgers, including his public comments on various topics, his strained family relationships, and his exploration of alternative spiritual practices beyond just ayahuasca. The series aims to provide an intimate look at Rodgers' life both on and off the field, capturing moments of vulnerability and introspection.

The documentary is structured as a three-part series, offering viewers a comprehensive look at Rodgers' recovery, his philosophical musings, and his controversial off-field escapades. It premiered on Netflix on December 17, 2024, and has been produced in collaboration with Religion of Sports, Skydance Sports, and NFL Films.

This documentary promises to peel back layers of Rodgers' public persona, revealing how his personal choices, including his engagement with psychedelics, have shaped his career and life beyond football.
