Coast Guard Rescues Barstool Sports Founder Dave Portnoy After Boat Goes Adrift Off Nantucket
On Monday, July 15, 2024, Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, was rescued by the United States Coast Guard after his boat lost power and drifted away from the harbor off Nantucket, Massachusetts. Portnoy, 47, referred to himself as “Captain Dave” as he recounted the harrowing experience in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter).
According to Portnoy, he had unhooked his boat from its buoy to check the engine’s power, but it turned out to be dead. With no power, radio, anchor, or other means of communication, Portnoy found himself adrift in heavy winds, heading out to the channel. He eventually used his boat’s flare gun to signal for help.
A woman and her child in a small rowboat spotted Portnoy’s distress and radioed the Coast Guard, who responded promptly. The Coast Guard team arrived and towed Portnoy’s boat back to mooring, rescuing him from the situation.
Portnoy expressed his gratitude to the Coast Guard, describing them as “four burly dudes” who saved him from a potentially dire outcome. He also praised the woman who initially spotted his distress and radioed for help, calling her his “unknown hero for the night.”
In the aftermath, Portnoy vowed to be more cautious on the water, stating, “Third time as captain, already lost at sea… it’s a dangerous game, the sea’s angry, my friends.” He also joked that he might never go on a boat again, saying, “Captain Dave may never go on the boat again… we almost lost Captain Dave to Mother Ocean today.” 17GEN4.com
