Chicago Police Recruit Arrested After Cocaine Found in Pants During Training

CHICAGO — A Chicago Police Department recruit was taken into custody Monday morning at the city’s police academy after allegedly being found with 8 grams of crack cocaine in his cargo pants during a routine narcotics search training exercise, authorities said.

The incident unfolded when another recruit, participating in a simulated search scenario, reportedly discovered the drugs in the suspect’s pocket. According to sources, the recruit claimed, “These aren’t my pants,” when confronted about the find, prompting immediate action from academy officials.

Chicago police have not released the recruit’s name, citing the ongoing investigation, but confirmed that the individual was arrested and charges are pending. The substance, identified as crack cocaine, was recovered during what was supposed to be a controlled training environment designed to prepare recruits for real-world scenarios.

“This is a serious breach of trust and conduct unbecoming of anyone aspiring to serve as a Chicago police officer,” said a department spokesperson in a statement. The CPD has launched an internal investigation to determine how the incident occurred and whether additional protocols are needed at the academy.

The arrest has raised eyebrows within the department and the community, with some questioning the vetting process for recruits. “If someone can walk into the academy with drugs, what does that say about the system?” asked local resident Maria Torres, 42, outside a South Side coffee shop.

Others, however, urged caution. “We don’t know the full story yet. It could be a mistake or something else entirely,” said James Carter, a retired CPD officer. “But it’s definitely not a good look.”

The incident comes at a time when the Chicago Police Department is under scrutiny for its efforts to rebuild public trust amid ongoing debates over police reform. The department has yet to comment on whether the recruit will face additional disciplinary measures beyond criminal charges.

Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses. For now, the recruit’s claim of borrowed pants has done little to quell the growing questions surrounding the case.
