Fake CDL licenses issued in Mexico are showing up as valid in U.S. databases

CDL drivers from Mexico with no training are driving semi trucks across the southern border and their fake, illegal licenses are showing up as valid in U.S. databases.



Texas enacted a new law in August of 2023 allowing prosecution targeted at counterfeit documents, including CDLs, from Mexico.


Fake Mexican driver’s licenses are a growing concern for law enforcement agencies in the United States.


  • Texas law now allows prosecutors to prosecute fake or counterfeit government documents from foreign countries, including Mexico.

  • Enforcement efforts, such as CBP seizures, aim to detect and prevent the use of counterfeit driver’s licenses.

  • The FMCSA has prohibited an illegal truck driver from operating commercial vehicles in the United States.
