On April 20, 2025, Kristi Noem, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, had her Gucci handbag stolen while dining at The Capital Burger, a restaurant in Washington, D.C. The bag contained sensitive and personal items, including her DHS access badge, driver’s license, passport, apartment keys, blank checks, prescription medication, makeup bag, and approximately $3,000 in cash. A smaller Louis Vuitton Clemence purse, valued at around $600, was also inside the Gucci bag, which retails for about $4,400.
Security footage reviewed by the Secret Service shows a white male suspect wearing a ball cap, dark pants, a “fur-type” collar, and an N95 surgical mask grabbing the bag and quickly exiting the restaurant. Noem reported feeling something brush past her leg but initially thought it was one of her grandchildren. She was dining with her family, including children and grandchildren, and a DHS official stated the cash was intended for family dinner, activities, and Easter gifts.
The Secret Service is actively investigating, using security footage and the stolen items to trace the suspect, who remains unidentified as of the latest reports. Noem confirmed the theft on April 21, 2025, while speaking to CNN at the White House Easter Egg Roll, and the investigation remains ongoing. No public statements indicate that any items have been recovered. The incident has raised questions about the presence of Noem’s Secret Service detail, who were stationed at the restaurant but did not immediately notice the theft.
