House Democrat Introduces Articles of Impeachment Against President Trump
Washington, D.C. — On April 28, 2025, Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) introduced seven articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, marking the first such effort by a House Democrat this year. The move, described as a long-shot bid, accuses the president of offenses including obstruction of justice, abuse of power, usurpation of power, bribery, and corruption, largely tied to his consolidation of executive authority and personal financial dealings. Thanedar, who announced the measures hours after facing a second primary challenger, called Trump “unfit to serve” and a “clear and present danger” to the nation’s Constitution and democracy.
The articles, introduced amid a Republican-controlled House and Senate, face steep odds of advancing. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) noted he had not yet reviewed the articles or discussed them with Thanedar, signaling a lack of immediate party support. A White House spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment. The impeachment push coincides with other Democratic efforts to challenge Trump’s administration, including Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) privately floating impeachment against key appointees like Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over unrelated controversies.
Analysts view the effort as largely symbolic. “The measures are almost certainly going nowhere,” reported Axios, citing the GOP’s congressional dominance. This is not the first impeachment attempt against Trump. During his first term, he was impeached twice—once in 2019 over allegations of pressuring Ukraine’s president for political favors and again in 2021 for inciting the January 6 Capitol riot. Both efforts resulted in Senate acquittals. Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), who previously filed impeachment articles, also vowed earlier this month to pursue new charges, though no formal action has followed.
