After earlier attempts were met with violence, including “Bloody Sunday,” this 54-mile trek culminated in a rally of 25,000 at the state capitol, pressuring Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act later that year.
1989: The Exxon Valdez oil tanker ran aground in Alaska’s Prince William Sound, spilling 11 million gallons of crude oil. One of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history, it devastated wildlife and ecosystems, prompting tighter regulations on shipping and spill response.
