Trump 47 Day 68

NEWS 3/28/2025 - On this day in:

  • 1854: The Crimean War kicked off in earnest when Britain and France declared war on Russia. This conflict, fought largely over influence in the Ottoman Empire, was a messy affair with lasting impacts, including the famous Charge of the Light Brigade later that year.

  • 1930: Constantinople and Angora got new names—Turkey officially renamed them Istanbul and Ankara, respectively. It was part of a broader push to modernize and Turkify the nation under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

  • 1979: A major nuclear scare hit the U.S. when the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania suffered a partial meltdown. No one died directly from it, but it fueled public distrust in nuclear power and tightened regulations.

  • 1834: The British Parliament got into a spat with the Church of England over church taxes, passing a resolution that basically told the bishops to back off. It was a small but telling moment in the long tug-of-war between church and state.

  • 2006: A darker note—Tom Fox, an American aid worker, was found dead in Iraq after being kidnapped by insurgents. His death highlighted the risks faced by civilians in conflict zones during the Iraq War.
