  • 1475: Michelangelo Buonarroti, the renowned Italian artist, sculptor, and painter of the Renaissance, was born in Caprese, Tuscany. He would go on to create masterpieces like the Sistine Chapel ceiling and the statue of David.

  • 1836: The Battle of the Alamo ended in San Antonio, Texas. After a 13-day siege, Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna overwhelmed the Texian defenders, killing most of them, including figures like Davy Crockett and James Bowie. This event became a rallying cry for Texas independence.

  • 1857: The U.S. Supreme Court delivered the infamous Dred Scott v. Sandford decision. Chief Justice Roger B. Taney ruled that African Americans were not U.S. citizens and that Congress could not ban slavery in the territories, intensifying the divide that led to the Civil War.
