  • 1614: Pocahontas, a Native American woman and daughter of Chief Powhatan, married English colonist John Rolfe in Virginia. This marriage helped establish a period of peace between the Jamestown settlers and the Powhatan tribe.

  • 1722: Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen became the first European to land on Easter Island, naming it after the day of his arrival. The island is famous for its monumental Moai statues.

  • 1792: U.S. President George Washington exercised the first presidential veto, rejecting a bill that would have apportioned representatives among the states. This marked the beginning of the veto power as a key executive check in the U.S. government.
