On April 22, 2025, a terrorist attack targeted tourists in Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir. The Resistance Front (TRF) claimed responsibility. At least 26 people were killed, including a Navy officer, an Intelligence Bureau officer, and two foreign tourists, with several others injured. The attackers, believed to include four to six Pakistani nationals, opened fire on a trekking group in the afternoon. The meadow’s remote location complicated evacuation efforts.

Indian authorities have responded swiftly. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack, vowing justice, while Home Minister Amit Shah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha are in Srinagar to review security. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is set to take over the case. Security has been heightened nationwide, with Delhi and Mumbai on high alert, and police are monitoring tourist spots closely. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the attack as unprecedented in scale, targeting civilians in a way not seen in recent years.

Local residents and security forces aided in evacuating the injured. Condemnations have come from global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, affirming solidarity with India. Intelligence suggests the attackers conducted prior reconnaissance, including hotel surveillance in early April. A high-level emergency meeting involving Shah, Sinha, Abdullah, and top officials is underway. Locals in Pahalgam held a candlelight march in response.
