Kansas City Firefighter-Paramedic Fatally Stabbed in Line of Duty
Kansas City, MO — A tragic incident has left the Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) and the community in mourning after firefighter-paramedic Graham Hoffman, 29, was fatally stabbed by a patient during an ambulance transport early Sunday morning, April 27, 2025. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Shanetta Bossell, has been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the attack.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. as Hoffman and his partner were transporting Bossell to Saint Luke’s Hospital on Barry Road following a routine medical call initiated by the Kansas City Police Department. During the transport, Bossell allegedly produced a knife and stabbed Hoffman in the chest, piercing his heart, said Kansas City Fire Chief Ross Grundyson in a statement to KCTV. Hoffman’s partner immediately stopped the ambulance at Missouri 152 and Platte Purchase Road, signaling for emergency assistance. A nearby police officer took Bossell into custody, and a knife was recovered from the scene, per a report by KMBC.
Despite heroic efforts by fellow KCFD paramedics and medical staff at North Kansas City Hospital, where Hoffman was rushed for treatment, he succumbed to his injuries in the intensive care unit. “KCFD crews worked tirelessly to save Firefighter Hoffman’s life en route to North Kansas City Hospital,” the city stated, noting that lifesaving efforts continued in the emergency room and surgery. “Graham was a vibrant individual who loved life and loved serving his community,” Chief Grundyson told KCTV. Hoffman, who joined the KCFD in 2022, was described as an exemplary paramedic known for his skill, compassion, and dedication.
The Clay County Prosecutor’s Office announced Sunday evening that Bossell faces charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Court records reveal this was not Bossell’s first encounter with law enforcement that month. On April 23, she was charged with allegedly attacking an off-duty Platte City police officer in Kansas City’s Northland, according to The Kansas City Star. In that incident, Bossell reportedly bit the officer after attempting to access vehicles outside his home.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas expressed outrage and grief, stating at a news conference, “I expect and will demand justice. I never expected a line of duty death like this one.” The KCFD honored Hoffman, noting he embodied “selfless service for others,” a sentiment echoed by city officials and community members.
The killing has sparked discussions about the safety of first responders, with Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins describing Hoffman as “a leader both on and off the job” in a statement to KCRA. Posts on X reflected public shock and anger, with users condemning the violence against a paramedic attempting to provide care. However, these sentiments remain inconclusive without further context.
Hoffman’s death marks a somber moment for Kansas City, as the community rallies to support his family and colleagues. A procession was held in his honor on Sunday, and the KCFD has vowed to remember his legacy of service.
